Sometimes glue behind the wallpapers kept sticking on the wall no matter how many times you clean them with a sponge and warm water. For such scenarios, we have come up with some DIY ways to get rid of the wallpaper glue from your wall.

cover floor for wallpaper removal

STEP 1: Cover Floor, Furniture, and Electric outlets

The process of taking off wallpaper glue requires a lot of water and other liquids, thus it is highly advised to cover your floor, furniture, and electrical outlets. Actually, it’s better to turn off the main electricity supply of that room you are working in. For the liquids may penetrate the tape covering on the outlet and can cause problems later on.

For furniture make sure if covered with drop cloth or something, it should be at the center of the room. Though the best you can do for furniture is to move it out of the room.

STEP 2: Prepare the glue remover

Solution: 1 (Dishwasher liquid + vinegar + water)

It’s quite simple, as most of us do have a liquid dishwasher and vinegar at home.

Now you just have to pour 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid into a gallon of hot water. After which add vinegar (apple/ Distilled white) into that water, it can be around 1 cup. Mix it well before applying it to the wall.

The effectiveness of this method also depends upon the temperature of the water. Make sure it’s hot instead of just Luke-warm.

How to Apply:

  • Use sponge to apply the solution to the wall and try to apply it on areas not more then 5 by 5 feet.
  • Let the solution soften the glue for few moments.
  • Now take the glue remnant off with a rag or microfiber cloth.
  • If there is some Stubborn spot, try to use putty knife to scrape it off after letting the solution applied for few minutes.
  • Once the all the residue is removed clean the wall with fresh water and let it dry before applying new paint.

(Note: try to start from top to bottom so you don’t have to clean a section twice)

Solution 2: (Dishwasher liquid + Baking Soda +water)

If you have gone out of vinegar don’t worry, just add a teaspoon of dishwasher liquid into a gallon of hot water, along with a heap of baking soda tablespoon.

It will also work for the glue however not as much effective as the vinegar method is.

How to Apply:

  • Apply the solution on the glue-covered spots and obviously as mentioned above, shouldn’t work on more than 5 feet section at a time (so the glue residue stays wet & soft)
  • After covering the glue, let it soften the glue for few minutes.
  • Then remove the remanents with a rag/ microfiber cloth and use putty knife for tough bits.
  • Wipe off once all the glue is remove with new water and let the wall dry completely.
  • For difficult patches try to soak it with vinegar solution until it seem to get softer (which you can check with your nails)

Solution 3: (vinegar + water 1:1)

If for some reason you don’t have enough liquid dishwasher Or baking soda to carry out the method but want to get it done tonight (now). You can use Vinegar and Water in equal proportion and spray them on the adhesive.

How to Apply:

  • Spray the solution on the wall and wait for few minutes
  • When the glue start budging
  • Gently scrape it off with either with a scraper or putty knife.

Warning WARNING:

  • If you have drywall instead of plaster, try to be careful or you can damage the wall while scraping with putty knife.
  • Also if have drywall make sure you don’t soak the wall wet too much or for too long.

However, if want to know how to tell if your room wall is drywall or plaster, check out the Second step of this post: How to Remove Wallpaper )

Solution 4: (Wallpaper remover) For toughest Bits

Wallpaper remover is also used while removing wallpaper itself and it’s most effective in getting rid of the most stubborn adhesive bits. Wallpaper remover isn’t that much expensive as it is effective in chipping off the rough patches. If you have left some wallpaper stripper after removing wallpaper you can use it. If not, try to buy the gel wallpaper stripper solution. For it can cover the glue remaining’s better as compared to diluted liquid strippers.

How to Apply:

  • Spray the gel wallpaper stripper on the patches where there is glue remaining’s.
  • Let the gel on the wall for nearly 15 minutes (tough be careful with drywall and try it on smaller spots first, as keeping it wet for 15 mints at time can damage it)
  • Now clean up the segment with a wet sponge (not too wet) and remove all the bits of glue residue along with gel
  • In the last wipe up the wall finally with fresh water and sponge. Then just let it dry.
